Curled up on the sofa in the game room, his computer balanced on his lap, Braxton should have been working, but his heart just wasn’t in it.

Across the room, Talon and Jackson were on their third game of pool. So far, Jackson hadn’t even come close to winning. On the other end of the sofa, Boston had his feet up on the coffee table, remote in hand as he surfed channels on the flatscreen.

Logan and Xander had both left for work right after an early dinner, and Braxton already missed his mate.

Under different circumstances—ones not involving him—he would be the first to say he and Xander were living together. Yet, he still insisted he had not moved in, despite the fact that his things had been slowly making their way to Xander’s house over the past week.

It had started with his clothes, shoes, laptop, and a few personal items. The contents of his bathroom had found their way to the cabin next. The previous day, the guys had brought home everything from Braxton’s office, including his desk and bookshelves. Then, they had set it all up in the study they had been using as a storage room.

So, yeah, denial wasn’t just a river in Egypt.

Braxton sighed as he thought about it. Maybe the time had come to swallow his fear and make a leap of faith. Just jump in feet first and see where the tide took him.

Yawning, he powered down his laptop and set it on the table. He had been making fantastic progress on his new project, but his productivity had been steadily declining since Xander’s shift change. Funny how quickly he had become accustomed to curling up next to his mate at night. Without him, Braxton slept fitfully, and he awoke tired and cranky most mornings.

He was exhausted, his brain felt like mush, and he could barely keep his eyes open. Not the least bit interested in going to bed alone, though, he searched for a distraction instead.

“How did you all meet?” he asked the room at large.

“Xander,” all three men answered in stereo.

“Me and Logan were basically feral when he found us,” Talon added.

Boston nodded. “Xander took us in, kept us safe.”

“He made us a family,” Jackson said. “We owe him our lives.”

Braxton swallowed around the lump in his throat as pride swelled in his heart, spreading warmth throughout his body. Love and admiration rang clearly in their voices, and their solemn expressions told him they meant every word they spoke.

He still didn’t fully understand, though. “Did you not have families? Why were you on your own?”

“We were abandoned by our packs,” Jackson said flatly.

“Herd.” Braxton lifted a hand in mock salute.

“Leap.” Talon smirked, and they all laughed.

Braxton didn’t get the joke. “I think I’m missing something.”

“Logan and I come from a leap.” Talon lined up the three ball and sank it in the corner pocket. When he looked up, he must have seen the confusion on Braxton’s face, because he added, “Leopards.”

“Wolf pack,” Jackson said.

“Deer herd.
